Meta Employees Sue Over AI-Assisted Layoffs

26 current and former Meta employees filed a class-action lawsuit against the company in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, Oakland division, on Monday, July 14, 2026. The plaintiffs allege that Meta's May 2026 mass layoffs relied on AI tools rather than managers' judgment.

What the lawsuit alleges

The complaint states directly: "Meta did not assemble the termination list through the considered judgment of managers who knew the work." The plaintiffs allege the algorithmic scoring system systematically penalized employees on legally protected leave — medical or family.

From the complaint: "employees who took protected leaves were disproportionately selected for layoff, based on scoring that not only failed to account for their protected leaves, but in effect penalized the employees for exercising their legal rights."

Meta's response

Meta Communications Director Andy Stone said: "These claims lack merit. Workforce management and organizational decisions were and are made by people, not AI."
