SpaceXAI Unveils Grok 4.5, Claiming 2x Token Efficiency
On July 8, 2026, SpaceXAI made Grok 4.5 available to the public — just 11 days after Elon Musk first announced it in a private beta for SpaceX and Tesla staff. Musk wrote on X: "Based on strong positive feedback from customers in our beta test program, @SpaceXAI will make Grok 4.5 available to the public tomorrow. It is an Opus-class model, but faster, more token-efficient and lower cost," TechCrunch reports.
The company claims twice the token efficiency of competing models. Grok 4.5 is priced at $2 per million input tokens and $6 per million output tokens; by comparison, Opus 4.7 — the model Musk personally compares Grok 4.5 to, rather than the newer Opus 4.8 — costs $5 and $25 respectively. Musk himself put it this way: "Our internal assessment is that Grok 4.5 is roughly comparable to Opus 4.7, but much faster. The combination of capability, faster speed and lower cost is what makes it competitive."
Independent benchmarks paint a more mixed picture. According to ChatForest, Grok 4.5 scores 64.7% on SWE-Bench Pro versus Opus 4.8's 69.2%, and 53% versus 59% on DeepSWE 1.1. The outlet explicitly cautions that token-efficiency claims are hard to verify externally and recommends testing the model on your own workloads before trusting the marketing numbers.
The upshot: Grok 4.5 isn't a blanket quality leader — it's a bet on a different price-to-speed tradeoff. For workloads where cost per token and response time matter more than the last few percentage points of accuracy on demanding engineering benchmarks, that could be a reasonable choice — with the caveat that the comparison is against a rival's previous model version, not its latest one.
