Tether Freezes $131M in USDT Over Iran Links
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced on July 14, 2026, the freeze of $131 million in USDT across four Tron wallets tied to the Central Bank of Iran. The addresses had previously been designated by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC).
How it was uncovered
An on-chain investigator known as Specter identified four wallets holding a combined roughly $131 million in USDT. Earlier blockchain analysis had linked similar transaction patterns to wallets associated with Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and intermediaries connected to Iran's central bank. Tether froze the addresses using the token's built-in control mechanisms, blocking any transfer of the funds.
The Treasury's statement
Bessent commented on the freeze: "Treasury is committed to disrupting and degrading Iran's illicit financial activities, including its abuse of digital assets."
Part of a broader campaign
This freeze is part of the US Treasury's "Operation Economic Fury" campaign, launched in March 2025. As of May 2026, the campaign had reportedly resulted in roughly $1 billion in seized Iranian crypto assets. In April 2026, Tether had already frozen about $344 million in USDT across two Tron wallets tied to Iranian networks — one holding about $213 million, the other about $131 million.
What this means in practice
The US has steadily ramped up its focus on Iran's crypto infrastructure throughout 2026: in June, Treasury sanctioned four Iranian crypto exchanges, including Nobitex, which the department said handled more than half of Iran's digital asset inflows in 2025. Tether's willingness to freeze addresses quickly at the request of US authorities underscores that USDT, despite running on a decentralized blockchain, remains an asset with a centralized point of control at the issuer level.
