Apple trained its own China AI model, with Alibaba's help

Apple has trained a proprietary AI model specifically for the China market with support from Alibaba, Reuters reported on August 14, citing three people familiar with the matter.

The move marks a departure from Apple's earlier approach in China, where it had relied on third-party models from local partners rather than training one of its own. The China-focused large language model was developed in partnership with Alibaba and trained with the Chinese tech giant's support, giving Apple more direct control over the AI features it ships in one of its largest and most competitive smartphone markets. Apple and Alibaba both declined to comment on the report.

The regulatory detail matters as much as the technical one: Apple is now the first foreign company Beijing has approved to offer a proprietary AI model inside China, a market that guards its algorithms closely and has historically pushed foreign tech firms toward domestic partners rather than independent models. China's Cyberspace Administration registered Apple's generative AI service last month, clearing the way for Apple Intelligence to launch in the country in the coming months following an iOS update. The Chinese version of Apple Intelligence is expected to fold in Alibaba's Qwen model alongside technology from Baidu, rather than relying on either as a full substitute for Apple's own system. Structuring the model this way lets Apple say it built and trained its own AI for China, while still drawing on domestic partners for the pieces that require deep familiarity with the Chinese regulatory and content environment.

They talked to a number of companies in China. In the end they chose to do business with us.

Joe Tsai, Chairman, Alibaba Group
  • Apple trained a proprietary China-market AI model with Alibaba's support, a first for the company
  • Apple is the first foreign firm Beijing has approved to offer its own AI model in China
  • China's Cyberspace Administration registered Apple's generative AI service last month
  • Apple Intelligence is expected to launch in China in the coming months via an iOS update
  • The China rollout will combine Apple's model with Alibaba's Qwen and technology from Baidu

The partnership lands as a rare instance of close US-China tech collaboration at a moment when the two governments keep tightening restrictions on chips, software, and cross-border data flows elsewhere. It also fits a broader pattern of Apple moving to control more of its own AI stack rather than depending entirely on outside partners: the company has separately been negotiating to pay news publishers directly for content to feed a rebuilt Siri, and it's suing OpenAI over alleged trade secret theft tied to its AI development. Each move points the same direction: Apple building and defending more of its AI capability directly, rather than treating it as something to license or outsource wholesale, whether the counterpart is a Chinese tech giant or a Silicon Valley rival. What's unusual here is that Apple found a workable path to that control inside China specifically, a market where most foreign AI ambitions have stalled against regulatory walls rather than cleared them.
