Bitcoin options traders are calm about this week, not the next six months

Bitcoin's options open-interest put/call ratio has fallen from 0.76 at the end of June to roughly 0.52 now — a nearly one-third drop in a month. In plain terms, that ratio compares purchased "downside insurance" (puts) to bets on higher prices (calls): the lower it goes, the fewer traders are paying for protection, and the more confident they are that at least a crash isn't coming. The Fed's meeting starts today, July 28, and runs through tomorrow — and judging by options positioning, the market expects it to pass calmly, CoinDesk reports.

  • Large traders are buying $70,000-strike calls and bull spreads — directly betting on upside, not just closing out risk
  • 25-delta skew (the premium for downside protection) sits around 4% for weekly options versus 11-12% for 3-to-6-month contracts
  • Implied volatility: 34.3% for the week ahead versus 40.8% for the six-month horizon
  • BTC price at the time of the report: $63,174.85 (down 2.25% on the day)

The gap between weekly and six-month contracts is the interesting part. Almost nobody is overpaying for protection on this specific week — traders don't think the Fed meeting itself is a crash trigger. Protection for the fall and winter, though, is getting pricier — meaning calm now doesn't mean calm overall, just that this particular week doesn't look like the source of risk.

For anyone who wants to trade these contracts directly rather than just watch options-market sentiment from the sidelines — Kraken recently launched USD-settled Bitcoin and Ether options.

The options market is rarely wrong about tomorrow — it's far more often wrong about six months out. For now, traders are voting exactly that way: calm about this week, wary about everything after it.
