Brave's new BAT roadmap teaches AI agents how to pay for you

Browser maker Brave has unveiled BAT Roadmap 4.0 — a new version of its roadmap for the Basic Attention Token (BAT), the Brave Rewards program, and the Brave Creators platform, built around what the company calls the "transactional attention economy." The roadmap's central new feature is support for autonomous AI agent payments.

How AI Agents Will Be Able to Pay

The new capabilities are built on two protocols: Internet-payments x402 and the Machine Payments Protocol (MPP). They let autonomous AI agents conduct microtransactions in the browser on a user's behalf — including paying for Brave's premium features and for creator content on the Brave Creators platform. In essence, this is technical infrastructure that lets an AI agent pay for small purchases or content access on its own, without requiring a human to manually approve each individual transaction.

BravePay and a Unified Wallet

A separate piece of the roadmap is BravePay, a stablecoin-based protocol layer that lets users, content creators, and merchants transact, earn, and settle privately directly on-chain. Tied to the protocol is the Brave Rewards Card — a stablecoin-powered virtual and physical payment card with a purchase rewards program.

Alongside this, Brave is introducing a new unified Brave Wallet that brings familiar payment methods — saved credit cards, self-custody crypto accounts, and Brave Rewards balances — into a single interface.

What's Changing for Creator Compensation

The roadmap also includes the Creator Contribution Protocol — an updated version of the Brave Creators model that, according to the company, opens new verifiable ways for content creators to earn as artificial intelligence changes how content is created, curated, and consumed.

Why It Matters

BAT Roadmap 4.0 is a telling example of how browser-level crypto infrastructure is preparing not so much for payments between people, but for an economy where a significant share of small transactions will be carried out by autonomous AI agents. Combining a stablecoin protocol, a physical card, and dedicated payment protocols specifically for machines is a bet that AI-agent micropayments will become a mass phenomenon on the internet in the near future, rather than a distant prospect.
