Cloudflare opens AI wallet handles for x402 payments

Cloudflare has opened registration for handles like research.example.cloudflare.pay — human-readable wallet addresses for AI agents that map to cryptographic keypairs. The idea works much like DNS mapping domain names to IP addresses: the handle provides transparency about who actually operates a given agent.

When an agent shows up at your door, you need to know who sent it. Cloudflare can give agents a face — a link to the human or organization that owns them — so that trust, accountability, and real commerce can follow

That's how Cloudflare co-founder and CEO Matthew Prince explained the launch. The architecture runs on two layers: an Account Wallet belongs to the human or organization that funds it and sets spending rules, with separate Virtual Wallets tied to it for each individual agent, operating through API keys.

Account holders will be able to set per-transaction maximums, weekly spending allowances (say, $100 per week per employee), lists of approved payment destinations, and an anomaly-detection system that triggers human review for unusual spending patterns — in other words, this is specifically about protecting against an agent overspending by mistake or through manipulation.

The launch builds naturally on an earlier Coinbase initiative: we previously covered how Coinbase launched a payment stack letting businesses accept payments from AI agents on x402 — now Cloudflare joins the ecosystem as an infrastructure player serving a large share of internet traffic. The built-in spending limits and anomaly checks also directly address concerns we covered in our digest on how AI agents are going off script and not following instructions — autonomous payments without hard spending caps would be especially risky in scenarios like that.

For now, this is just phase one — handle registration without actual payments. But if Cloudflare follows through on funding and Virtual Wallet issuance, the millions of sites already running on its infrastructure would gain a ready-made standard way to charge AI agents for content and API access, instead of simply blocking them or letting them through for free.
