Ethereum pushes Glamsterdam to Q3 — and ETH's price felt it immediately

The Ethereum Foundation has officially confirmed what developers had been signaling for months: the long-anticipated protocol upgrade codenamed Glamsterdam is slipping from its originally planned June target into the third quarter of 2026.

Why the Timeline Slipped

The main reason for the delay is that engineering progress on ePBS (enshrined proposer-builder separation) — a key protocol-level component of the upgrade — has fallen behind schedule. According to the team, ePBS still faces interoperability challenges between consensus clients and execution clients across multiple testnets, which made the original timeline unworkable.

What Glamsterdam Was Supposed to Deliver

The upgrade is designed as a large-scale overhaul of how the Ethereum network creates and verifies blocks, reorganizing transaction processing and database management at a fundamental level. It bundles several Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs): EIP-7732 (ePBS itself, potentially cutting MEV — value extracted by miners/validators — by up to 70%), EIP-7928 (BALs, enabling parallel transaction execution toward a 10,000 TPS target), and EIP-7904 (gas repricing, potentially cutting fees by roughly 78.6%). The team also flagged a new 200-million gas limit floor for the network as a notable technical milestone — up from the current roughly 60 million.

How the Price Reacted

News of the delay coincided with ETH's price dropping below $1,850. While drawing a direct causal line between a protocol upgrade delay and a short-term price move is difficult — broader market factors were also weighing on ether during the same period — market participants typically read delays in Ethereum's roadmap as a negative signal about the network's pace of technical development relative to competitors.

What It Means for ETH Holders

An upgrade delay is nothing new for Ethereum on its own: the network has historically pushed back major updates repeatedly in favor of technical reliability over hard deadlines. But in the current market environment, with ether already fighting to win back institutional trust alongside spot ETF inflows, added uncertainty around the timeline of a key technical upgrade gives the market extra reason for short-term caution.
