Exchange Collapses as Bear-Market Bottoms? What History Says About BitMEX
One of crypto's legendary exchanges, BitMEX, is shutting down on September 23 — after 12 years and the invention of the perpetual futures contract. As the news spread on X, part of the crypto community started treating it less as a warning sign and more as a bullish one: historically, the collapse of a major exchange has almost always coincided with the market getting close to a bottom.
- Mt. Gox (2014) — the collapse of the largest exchange at the time; the next cycle's peak brought a rally of roughly +12,800%.
- BitGrail (2018) — an Italian exchange lost $170 million in NANO in the depths of the bear market; the next cycle peak delivered around +2,100%.
- FTX (2022) — the collapse of a $32 billion exchange; the subsequent rally to the cycle peak was roughly +715%.
The logic behind the pattern is simple: a major exchange collapse is a moment of maximum fear, when panicked sellers have already exited and available supply temporarily dries up. A similar signal already showed up this cycle: bitcoin's realized profit-and-loss ratio dropped to -0.35, a 43-month low last seen in December 2022, right after FTX collapsed, news.Bitcoin.com reports.
“It reduces tail risk and could help bitcoin find a more durable bottom.”

Worth saying upfront: three cases isn't a statistically reliable sample, and BitMEX's shutdown doesn't guarantee the pattern repeats — especially since it's a scheduled wind-down, not a sudden failure. But the timing lines up with bitcoin's current bounce back to $65,000 ahead of the Fed meeting, which is exactly why it carries extra weight for anyone looking for signs the bear market is ending.
