
Firedancer: the new validator software meant to end Solana's network outages for good
Firedancer is an independently developed software client for Solana validators that's gradually solving one of the network's biggest structural problems: almost the entire infrastructure depending on a single codebase. Here's what it is and why it matters even to people far removed from the technical details.
What Firedancer Actually Is
Firedancer is a completely independent implementation of Solana validator software, written from scratch by Jump Crypto in C and C++, without reusing code from the existing Agave client that the entire network originally ran on. It officially launched on mainnet in December 2025.
Why Client Diversity Matters at All
Before Firedancer, virtually every Solana validator ran software derived from the single Agave codebase. That meant any critical bug in that code could theoretically affect the entire network at once — exactly the kind of structural vulnerability behind Solana's best-known past outages. Having a genuinely independent client reduces that systemic risk: if a bug shows up in one implementation, a second one, written by a different team in a different language, is unlikely to share the same flaw.
How Much of the Network Firedancer Runs Now
As of mid-2026, the full version of Firedancer handles roughly 14% of staked SOL, with another 26% running on "Frankendancer," a hybrid variant combining old and new code. Combined, that means the Agave-family share has fallen from 100% to roughly 60% — the first time in Solana's history that a meaningful share of the network isn't running the original client. Full majority Firedancer adoption is expected to take another 12-24 months.
How Much Faster It Actually Is
In controlled lab tests on commodity hardware, Firedancer's networking layer processed more than 1.1 million transactions per second — a figure independently confirmed by both the Firedancer and Agave teams. For comparison, Solana mainnet's sustained throughput typically runs at 3,000-5,000 transactions per second. Under real-world conditions, the hybrid Frankendancer has already demonstrated more than 600,000 transactions per second, and mainnet's average block time hit a record 359 milliseconds in January 2026.
Why It Matters for Regular Network Users
Even setting aside the speed gains, simply having a viable alternative to a single client makes the network more resilient to outages — and it's precisely the network's repeated outages that have historically been the biggest hit to Solana's reputation. Firedancer is also designed to be "MEV-pluggable": its multi-process tile architecture lets third-party developers swap in their own block-building logic without rewriting the entire client.
