Fireworks AI raises $1.5B at a $17.5B valuation, betting cheaper beats closed models

AI infrastructure startup Fireworks AI has closed a $1.5 billion Series D funding round at a $17.5 billion valuation. The round was led by Atreides Management, Index Ventures, and TCV, with participation from Nvidia, Evantic Capital, Lightspeed Venture Partners, Bessemer Venture Partners, Menlo Ventures, 20VC, and other investors — making it one of the largest AI infrastructure funding rounds of 2026.

The Business Numbers

The funding comes as Fireworks surpassed $1 billion in annualized revenue run rate — up 5x year-over-year since its last round. Daily token volume on its platform has nearly tripled, from 15 trillion to more than 40 trillion tokens per day. More than 95% of those tokens come not from calls to generic, general-purpose models, but from models specialized on customers' own data and fine-tuned for specific jobs.

Betting on "Specialized Intelligence"

The company's thesis is that most practical business use cases don't need one giant general-purpose model — a smaller, specialized model fine-tuned on a company's own data and workflows runs faster and far cheaper. Fireworks co-founder and CEO Lin Qiao frames the economics directly: "Our cost compared with the equivalent-quality closed model is five to 10 times cheaper."

Earlier this year, when the company reported an earlier milestone, Qiao posted on X:

We just hit a major milestone — @FireworksAI_HQ passed $800M annualized run rate and reached 4x revenue growth, apart from Cursor, in Q1. We invite curious and courageous minds to join us and define new frontiers of specialized intelligence!

The Bigger Picture

The company's positioning ties into a broader thesis about where the AI market is headed: "There are two paths forward for AI. In one, intelligence belongs to a few big labs, and everyone else rents it," according to the company's materials for the round. Fireworks is pitching itself as the alternative — letting every company own and customize its own cheap, specialized AI instead of simply paying to access someone else's closed model.
