Markets brace for the Fed's July 28-29 meeting — and almost no one expects a rate cut

The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meets July 28-29, 2026 — the first meeting under new chair Kevin Warsh. Markets on Polymarket and Kalshi are pricing the odds of a rate hold above 85%, per KuCoin.

How far off a cut really is

  • The Fed's target rate range has held at 3.5%-3.75% since late 2025.
  • Markets are pricing a 76.5% chance of zero rate cuts at all in 2026, and just 19.8% odds of even one 25-basis-point cut.
  • Goldman Sachs forecasts the first cuts only in June and December 2027, with a terminal rate of 3%-3.25%.

What this means for crypto

According to CryptoBriefing, analysts describe the current setup this way:

Higher rates for longer is not a comfortable environment for risk assets, and crypto sits squarely in that category.

Institutional demand is holding up regardless

Even so, institutional flows into bitcoin and ethereum have remained surprisingly durable thanks to spot ETFs, even under a tighter monetary backdrop. Analysts suggest watching not so much the rate decision itself (which looks largely settled) as the FOMC's language on whether current policy remains "sufficiently restrictive" — those nuances tend to move markets more than the headline number. We covered a similar tension — between near-term caution and longer-term institutional conviction — in our piece on Grayscale's view that bitcoin may have already bottomed, where the Fed's decision was named as one of the key drivers of where price goes next.
