Western Union launches Stablecard, a Visa card for USDPT in 37 markets
Western Union has partnered with Rain to launch Stablecard, a digital wallet and Visa-branded card that lets users hold and spend USDPT, a US dollar-backed stablecoin issued by Anchorage Digital Bank on the Solana blockchain. The service is already live in 37 markets, and Western Union plans to expand coverage to over 60 markets by the end of 2026.
Functionally, Stablecard lets recipients of Western Union money transfers receive funds directly into a USDPT wallet, move balances to compatible crypto wallets and exchanges, and spend their balance anywhere Visa is accepted — including through Apple Pay and Google Pay. Western Union first unveiled USDPT back in May 2026, designing it to align with the GENIUS Act framework governing payment stablecoins in the US; exchange Bybit added USDPT trading and transfer support in June 2026.

Stablecard's launch responds to growing demand from remittance recipients and consumers in countries with unstable local currencies who want a way to hold savings specifically in dollars. Western Union already has a direct rival in this space: MoneyGram launched its own stablecoin, MGUSD, on the Stellar network for the same purpose. It's worth balancing that against a more cautious view of the industry, too — a Bank of Italy study found that stablecoin remittances don't consistently outperform traditional channels, since most of the cost and delay tends to come from converting between fiat and crypto rather than from the blockchain transfer itself.
