What is volatility, and why do crypto prices swing so much

Volatility is a measure of how sharply and quickly an asset's price fluctuates over a given period. High volatility means sharp price swings in both directions; low volatility means smooth, predictable changes. Cryptocurrencies are, on average, several times more volatile than large-cap stocks or gold.

Why Crypto Is Especially Volatile

  • Shallow market depth compared to traditional finance — a relatively modest trade can noticeably move the price, especially for less liquid coins
  • 24/7 trading with no closing hours — unlike stock exchanges, the crypto market never closes, so breaking news gets priced in instantly, at any hour
  • A high share of retail and emotionally driven traders — panic and euphoria spread faster where a large share of participants are non-professional
  • Use of borrowed funds (leverage) — forced liquidations of leveraged positions can sharply amplify an already strong price move
  • A young market with less regulatory certainty — a single regulatory headline can shift the entire market's expectations at once

How Volatility Is Measured

Volatility is most often expressed as the standard deviation of an asset's returns over a period — in plain terms, how far the price typically strays from its average. A higher number means sharper, less predictable swings.

What This Means in Practice

High volatility isn't the market "malfunctioning" — it's an inherent feature of the market at its current stage of development: it offers a chance to profit faster than traditional assets, but proportionally raises the risk of losing money just as fast. Understanding volatility helps size positions and risk more accurately, rather than treating every double-digit daily swing as something abnormal.
