Augustus raises $180M to build a clearing bank for the AI and stablecoin era — led by a 25-year-old CEO
Fintech company Augustus has announced a $180 million Series B funding round at a $1 billion valuation, aimed at building a federally chartered bank whose payments architecture is designed from the ground up for stablecoin settlement and AI agent activity, not just human customers.
Who Backed the Round
The round was led by Tiger Global, with participation from Hummingbird, QED, and the founders of Nubank, Ramp, Circle, and Deel. The company was founded in 2022 by Ferdinand Dabitz, Joshua Becker, Simon Wimmer, and Peter Lieck.
A Young CEO and a Conditional Bank Charter
Augustus CEO Ferdinand Dabitz, a recipient of the Thiel Fellowship — awarded by billionaire Peter Thiel to young entrepreneurs who drop out of college to build a business — is just 25 years old, reportedly making him the youngest head of a federally chartered bank in more than 140 years.
Back in May 2026, Augustus received conditional approval for a national bank charter from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC), becoming the eighth bank to receive such conditional approval since 2010. At the time, the company also raised $40 million from Peter Thiel's Valar Ventures, Creandum, and the founders of Ramp, Deel, and Circle.
What Augustus Is Actually Building
The company describes its mission as "dollarizing the world": giving financial institutions worldwide direct access to dollar accounts and payment rails through a modern, federally chartered bank. The focus is on fintechs and banks in Latin America, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. Customers will be able to transact with first and third parties via Swift, ACH, SEPA, and stablecoins.
The bank's technical foundation is its proprietary core banking platform, Marble, which deploys AI across back-office processes to enable faster settlement times and 24/7/365 availability.
Why It Matters
Augustus's story is a telling example of how a traditional bank charter and modern stablecoin infrastructure are increasingly merging into a single product: this isn't a crypto wrapper bolted onto traditional banking, but a federally regulated bank designed from the start around programmable money and automated AI processes. The participation of the founders of Circle, Nubank, Ramp, and Deel in the round also shows that this bet is being placed by people who have already built successful fintech businesses in both traditional and crypto-payments niches.
