CoinShares just gave European pension funds a regulated way into bitcoin mining stocks

Investment firm CoinShares has launched a new exchange-traded fund under the ticker MINE on Deutsche Börse Xetra, tracking a basket of publicly listed bitcoin mining companies. Trading in the fund began on July 16, 2026.

Why This Isn't Just Another ETF

The key feature of the new product is its UCITS (Undertakings for Collective Investment in Transferable Securities) legal structure, authorized by the Central Bank of Ireland. That structure gives the company its own regulated platform for launching future investment products into Europe's collective-investment market, which held €26.3 trillion in net assets as of April 2026.

The significance of this move is that many institutional investors — pension funds, insurance platforms, private banks — are barred by their mandates from investing in the debt-based crypto ETPs that have previously dominated the European market. The UCITS structure lets exactly these investors gain bitcoin mining exposure through a format already permitted under their investment mandates.

How the Fund Is Built

The fund is physically replicated and tracks the CoinShares Bitcoin Mining Index — a rules-based basket of publicly traded mining companies administered by Solactive AG. The fund's total expense ratio is 0.65% annually, and it rebalances quarterly. At launch, the fund's shares traded around €19.50 ($21.74).

What Comes Next

CoinShares expects to bring additional digital-asset and other thematic investment strategies to the new UCITS platform over time — with each subsequent fund launch requiring less time and lower incremental cost, since the regulatory infrastructure is already in place.

Why It Matters

The launch of MINE is a telling example of how the crypto industry is finding indirect routes to the most conservative institutional capital — not through direct bitcoin ownership, but through shares of public companies whose businesses are built around mining the cryptocurrency. For European pension funds and insurers previously shut out of this exposure by their own mandates, it opens a channel into the bitcoin mining theme without ever holding the cryptocurrency itself.
