Bitcoin at $66,300: fresh 10-hour analytics — what's happening and where it's headed
Bitcoin is holding near the $66,300 mark — close to a five-week high — with the asset's market capitalization at roughly $1.3 trillion and 24-hour trading volume around $29.9 billion. Here's what's changed over the past few hours and which levels are worth watching next.
The Macro Backdrop of the Past Few Hours
The fresh backdrop for bitcoin is shaped by several factors at once: chip stocks are extending their rally, and the Japanese yen has hit a 40-year low against the dollar. That combination of signals in traditional markets is creating an additional tailwind for risk assets, crypto included.
The Key Level: $68,000
According to Bitfinex analysts, $68,000 is the key resistance level that will decide whether the current rally continues. That level matters for two reasons at once: it sits close to the average purchase price of investors who bought bitcoin over the past five months, and it coincides with June's local high, after which the previous rebound attempt rolled over and the price fell to fresh cycle lows below $58,000.
The Market's "Summer Slumber"
Despite ETF flows stabilizing, trading activity remains subdued — in the words of K33 Research analyst Vetle Lunde, the market is in "summer slumber" mode. Bitcoin's 30-day trading volume is running at just 62% of its annual average, and late July has historically been the weakest period of the year for activity.
ETF Inflows and Institutional Demand
US spot bitcoin ETFs logged a fifth straight day of inflows, totaling roughly $727 million — the longest stretch of buying since June's record outflows. Reports note, though, that demand hasn't fully recovered: both ETF inflows and purchases by corporate bitcoin treasury companies remain noticeably below levels seen earlier this year. Among institutional holders, Strategy continues accumulating bitcoin, drawing on a $3 billion reserve raised through a stock sale — providing a certain floor of demand.
The Technical Picture
On the daily chart, the MACD histogram is expanding in positive territory, and RSI is holding above 50 — both indicators pointing to a cautiously bullish mood. Even so, price remains noticeably below the 200-day exponential moving average near $74,405, keeping the broader trend structurally bearish. Compressed Bollinger Bands across multiple timeframes point to an approaching sharp volatility expansion — meaning a strong move in either direction could be near.
Market Sentiment
The Fear & Greed Index sits at 29 — in "Fear" territory — signaling cautious sentiment across the broader crypto market despite the positive price action and ETF inflows.
The Main Event Ahead
The calendar for the coming weeks is dominated by a single event: the Federal Reserve's July 28-29 rate decision. The market is pricing in a 95% probability of a hold, and uncertainty around the Fed's decision remains the key factor shaping sentiment across the crypto market as a whole.
Why It Matters
The combination of a technically "cautiously bullish" short-term picture, continuing — if muted — ETF inflows, and an approaching Fed decision creates a situation where the market is essentially waiting for a specific trigger for its next directional move. A break above $68,000 would confirm the rally's strength, while a failure at that level — given its historical significance — could once again trigger a pullback to lower levels.
