Brazil issues its first loan backed by tokenized cows

Brazil's B3 stock exchange has registered the country's first tokenized-livestock financing deal: ten cows worth R$120,000 (~$23,600) backed a R$100,000 (~$19,700) loan, at a 1.2x collateral ratio, CryptoBriefing reports.

Who does what in this deal

  • Cowmed — fits the cattle with smart collars that track health, behavior, and location; AI analytics process the data and turn it into encrypted digital identifiers tied to the loan agreement.
  • BMP Sociedade de Crédito Direto — provides the loan itself, structured as a Cédula de Produto Rural Financeira (CPR-F), a rural credit note.
  • Target FIDC — registers and manages the receivables on B3's platform.

Why it changes the calculus

Previously, a lender had to send someone to physically inspect the cattle before issuing a loan — sometimes a multi-hour drive to a remote farm. Now the lender can assess the collateral from real-time blockchain records instead of visiting in person.

The scale of the ambition

Cowmed already monitors roughly 100,000 cows across 1,200 farms in six countries — a herd worth about R$2 billion combined. The company projects its full monitored base could support up to R$400 million (~$78.7 million) in financing. Target FIDC is already evaluating four similar deals worth about R$5 million total for 2026, while B3 itself is preparing its own tokenization platform and a real-pegged stablecoin, also targeted for 2026. We recently covered a similar shift toward real-world-asset tokenization in our piece on tokenized US Treasuries.
