Coinbase missed on revenue across the board — but still grew its market share
Coinbase closed Q2 2026 with $1.22 billion in revenue — below the $1.29 billion analysts expected. Both key business lines came in soft: transaction revenue was $599 million versus a $628 million estimate, and subscription and services revenue was $555 million versus $599 million expected. Shares fell roughly 5% in after-hours trading.
CFO Alesia Haas explained the miss plainly: market conditions were tough, with industry-wide spot trading volumes down more than 20% as Bitcoin fell roughly 14% and Ethereum dropped about 25% over the quarter, CoinDesk reports. The company posted a net loss of $359 million, though adjusted EBITDA stayed positive at $207.8 million — its 14th consecutive quarter in the black on that metric.
- Total spot trading volume on the exchange fell more than 20% quarter over quarter
- Despite that, Coinbase captured a record 10.3% share of global crypto trading volume
- Stablecoin revenue came in at $292 million — one of the few growing segments
- The company's Bitcoin holdings grew 5% for the quarter, to 17,211 BTC
Rivals show similar weakness: Robinhood's crypto trading revenue fell 38% year over year to $100 million, suggesting this is an industry-wide problem, not just a Coinbase issue. CEO Brian Armstrong pointed to diversification — stablecoins, the Base network, and prediction markets — though that bet doesn't always pay off: Armstrong himself has already admitted Base's creator coin bet failed.
