Strategy posted an $8.3B quarterly loss — and pulled real cash for dividends from bitcoin it actually sold
Michael Saylor's Strategy reported its second-quarter 2026 results on July 30: a net loss of $8.22 billion, or $24.45 per diluted share — far worse than the $2.19 per share analysts had expected. The reason is simple and by now familiar: the Bitcoin on the company's balance sheet fell below its purchase cost basis, and under FASB fair-value rules that turns into a paper loss, not actual lost cash.
But there's something more significant behind the quarter's numbers than an accounting line: between June 29 and July 5, Strategy actually sold 3,588 BTC — for roughly $216 million, CryptoSlate reports. We covered that trade separately — it was the largest Bitcoin sale in the company's history. According to Saylor, the proceeds covered quarterly dividends on preferred shares STRF, STRE, STRK, and STRD, plus the full June dividend payment on STRC. The company sold below its average purchase price, locking in a real loss — over $55 million, by Lookonchain's estimate.
- The sale broke down into 1,363 BTC at $59,256 and 2,225 BTC at $60,773 — both batches below the portfolio's average cost basis of $75,476 per coin
- Despite the sale, the company grew its Bitcoin holdings roughly 11% for the quarter, to 843,775 BTC worth $54.64 billion at current prices
- Convertible debt fell 18% to $6.7 billion, while dollar reserves rose 12% to $2.4 billion
- Strategy remains the largest public corporate holder of Bitcoin
The telling shift: Strategy's whole model was built on relentless accumulation with no selling, and now the company is tapping its holdings to cover its own dividend obligations. That raises an obvious question — will sales like this become routine during future market drawdowns, or does July's trade stay a one-off exception?
