JPMorgan quadrupled its Ether ETF stake last quarter

JPMorgan increased its Bitcoin ETF position by 25% and more than quadrupled its Ether ETF holdings in the second quarter, according to a Form 13F filed with the SEC covering holdings as of June 30, a filing that offers one of the clearest public snapshots of how a major bank's own balance sheet exposure to crypto has shifted over the past three months.

The bank's stake in BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) rose to 10.4 million shares, worth roughly $356 million, up from 8.3 million shares in the first quarter. Its position in BlackRock's iShares Ethereum Trust (ETHA) jumped from about 267,000 shares to roughly 1.17 million shares over the same period, a more than fourfold increase. The filing also showed a new, much smaller move: JPMorgan reported holding XRP-linked products worth $5,119 across Grayscale and Bitwise offerings, having held none the prior quarter. Together, the three positions give a fuller picture of a bank quietly expanding its crypto ETF footprint across all three major assets rather than concentrating the increase in Bitcoin alone.

Whether any of this adds up to a directional view on crypto is harder to say than the headline numbers suggest. Jonatan Randin, senior market analyst at PrimeXBT, cautioned that 13F filings aggregate positions across a firm's investment managers and exclude short positions, so they show what a bank is doing without necessarily showing what it believes about where prices are headed. A growing ETF position can reflect client demand a bank is servicing, inventory it holds to support trading and market-making, or a genuine directional bet, and the filing alone doesn't distinguish between them. JPMorgan hasn't issued a public statement explaining the specific rationale behind either increase, and 13F rules don't require one.

  • JPMorgan's IBIT (Bitcoin) position rose 25%, from 8.3 million to 10.4 million shares, worth about $356 million
  • Its ETHA (Ether) position more than quadrupled, from about 267,000 to roughly 1.17 million shares
  • New this quarter: $5,119 in XRP-linked products across Grayscale and Bitwise, versus none in Q1
  • 13F filings combine all of a firm's investment managers and exclude short positions
  • Analysts caution the increase may reflect client demand or market-making inventory rather than a bullish call

The filing lands in an odd juxtaposition with JPMorgan's other recent moves in crypto. The same bank quietly cut its banking relationship with prediction market Polymarket over regulatory concerns even as it grew its crypto ETF exposure, and CEO Jamie Dimon has spent plenty of public commentary warning that markets are underpricing risk more broadly. None of that is necessarily contradictory, a bank can service growing client demand for crypto ETF exposure while its executives stay publicly skeptical and its compliance teams de-risk unrelated banking relationships, but it's a reminder that a single 13F line item rarely tells the whole story of what an institution actually thinks about an asset. The XRP position, small as it is, follows the same logic: $5,119 isn't a strategic bet by any reasonable definition, but its appearance after a quarter of zero exposure shows a bank willing to hold at least token amounts of assets it isn't publicly endorsing.
