Elon Musk: saving for retirement won't matter — AI and robots will erase the cost of labor

Elon Musk has once again drawn attention to his forecast that traditional retirement savings will lose their meaning within the coming decades — as artificial intelligence and robotics, in his view, drive the cost of human labor sharply lower.

What Musk Actually Said

"Don't worry about squirreling money away for retirement in 10 or 20 years. It won't matter," Musk said on the Moonshots with Peter Diamandis podcast. He described the advance of AI and robotics as "the supersonic tsunami" and added: "We're in the singularity."

The Reasoning Behind the Forecast

According to Musk, "anything short of shaping atoms, AI can do probably half or more of those jobs right now." He also expressed confidence that "by the year 2030, AI will exceed the intelligence of all humans combined."

A World of Abundance Instead of Retirement Savings

The logic behind the forecast is that advancing AI and robotics will drive the cost of labor to zero, meaning goods and services — housing, healthcare, education, entertainment — become effectively free. In that picture, money itself, in the conventional sense, loses its significance, and along with it the question of retirement savings resolves itself. Musk has floated the concept of "universal high income" — the idea that living standards will rise so much that traditional questions of financial security in old age become irrelevant.

Why It Matters

Musk's forecast isn't financial advice in the conventional sense — it's a bet on a specific technological trajectory that remains contested even among AI specialists. Statements like this from one of the world's most visible tech entrepreneurs meaningfully shape the public conversation about how to prepare for a possible future in which traditional financial tools like retirement savings could lose their former significance — regardless of whether the scenario plays out on the timeline Musk has named.
