Rocket Lab unveiled a portable launch system it can deploy almost anywhere, even as skepticism deepens over how close its long-delayed Neutron rocket actually is to flying, according to this week's roundup of launch industry news, according to Ars Technica's weekly Rocket Report.

Rocket Lab introduced GHOST, short for Global Hypersonic & Orbital Spaceport Technology, a portable spaceport built to give the company launch-anywhere, launch-anytime capability for multi-launch campaigns. The idea grew out of a request from a HASTE customer that wanted more launch-site flexibility. Rocket Lab also plans to add a fourth operating site at Alaska's Pacific Spaceport Complex, joining its existing pads in New Zealand and Virginia.

Neutron, the medium-lift rocket Rocket Lab has been developing to compete for larger contracts, remains the bigger question mark. Company language describing Stage 2 as ready to ship to the launch site has stayed largely unchanged for about 12 months, a pattern that's drawn skepticism from close observers of the program. CEO Peter Beck has said the stages are targeting Q4 2026 delivery, but integration and testing delays mean Neutron will not launch this year; a 2027 debut looks more likely, though it isn't guaranteed given the program's track record so far. Rocket Lab has built a genuinely diversified launch and space-systems business around that delay, which is part of why GHOST and the Alaska expansion are landing as credible near-term news even while Neutron keeps slipping.

The reporting this week sits against a backdrop of unusually heavy SpaceX news flow, from a single word on an earnings call that wiped 14% off the company's valuation in a single trading session to boosters like Peter Diamandis arguing SpaceX could eventually be worth $10 trillion. Rocket Lab and Blue Origin's more incremental, infrastructure-focused announcements this week are a reminder that most of the launch industry's actual progress happens well outside the valuation headlines, in pad construction schedules and stage-readiness language that only shifts a little at a time.
