Tether Gold just won official commodity status in Abu Dhabi's financial center
The Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM), the emirate's international financial center, has officially recognized Tether's tokenized gold, XAU₮ (Tether Gold), as an Accepted Spot Commodity. Tether announced the decision on July 20, 2026.
What Exactly This Changes
The recognition allows firms registered in ADGM to offer XAU₮-related services — including custody, trading, and settlement — provided those firms already hold the relevant regulatory permissions from the Financial Services Regulatory Authority (FSRA) to deal in Accepted Spot Commodities. In other words, the status doesn't automatically open access to everyone, but it gives firms already licensed in the jurisdiction a clear, defined path to launch products built around tokenized gold.
This is already the second Tether product to gain official status in ADGM: the FSRA previously recognized the USD₮ stablecoin as an Accepted Fiat Referenced Token. The XAU₮ recognition expands the range of Tether products that authorized firms in the financial center can now formally support.
What XAU₮ Actually Is
Each XAU₮ token corresponds to one troy fine ounce of physical gold held in a London Good Delivery bar, stored in secure vaults, mainly in Switzerland. The token is issued on two blockchain networks at once — Ethereum (under the ERC-20 standard) and Tron (under the TRC-20 standard).
Against a Backdrop of Rapid Growth
The ADGM recognition comes amid notable growth for the asset itself: XAU₮'s market capitalization surpassed $3.3 billion in the first quarter of 2026 — up 36% quarter-over-quarter — while the gold reserves backing the token rose by the same 36%, up from roughly 520,000 ounces at the end of 2025. According to DefiLlama, XAU₮'s locked value has more than tripled over the past year — from about $826 million to roughly $2.86 billion — placing the token among the largest products in the tokenized commodities market.
Why It Matters
Rising demand for tokenized gold coincides with broader investor appetite for safe-haven assets amid macroeconomic uncertainty and geopolitical tension. Formal recognition of XAU₮ by a regulator at a financial center as significant as ADGM reduces regulatory uncertainty for institutional players in the region and strengthens Tether's position not just as the issuer of the largest stablecoin, but as a provider of regulated products backed by physical commodities.
