What Traders Are Saying

Analyst Michaël van de Poppe laid out a scenario on X back on July 5, 2026, in which a breakout above $65,000 for bitcoin was expected to pull altcoins out of their year-long downtrend — anticipating one to two months of strong momentum before a possible correction in September or October. On July 16, he also noted that Ethereum had posted its first meaningful move against bitcoin in more than a year, and expected a brief consolidation before another leg higher — though a strong bitcoin rally could, in his view, temporarily delay altcoins outperforming.

Analytics platform CryptoQuant separately points out that nearly 40% of altcoins are still trading below 25% of their all-time highs — meaning that despite some standout moves, a large share of the sector remains deeply depressed. At the same time, according to analytics platform Santiment, several altcoins posted notable gains over the past week: MemeCore added 89%, Cardano rose 25%, DEXE climbed 23%, and Bitcoin Cash advanced 22%.

Why It Matters

The picture is mixed: some indicators — Ethereum's move against bitcoin, sharp rallies in smaller tokens — fit the classic description of an early altseason. But CryptoQuant's data showing nearly 40% of altcoins still deeply below their highs suggests it's premature to call this a full, broad-based altseason: the gains are concentrated in specific names rather than spread across the sector as a whole.
