The 2026 World Cup Drove On-Chain Prediction Markets to $20B — Almost 400,000 Wallets Placed Bets

The 2026 FIFA World Cup became the biggest sporting event in the history of blockchain prediction markets: according to analytics firm Chainalysis, they processed $20 billion in volume since January 2026, with almost 400,000 unique wallets placing bets. Of that, $5.7 billion came directly during the tournament's five-week run, and World Cup-related markets made up about 63% of all prediction-platform activity in that window.

  • 2024 US presidential election: $3.6 billion in volume — nearly a third of the tournament period alone
  • Super Bowl LX (February 2026): more than $1 billion
  • NCAA March Madness final: more than $1 billion

Polymarket remains the leader, valued at $15 billion during funding talks in April 2026. Its main rival is Kalshi, which is chasing a $40 billion valuation while getting sued by New York State today over allegedly unlicensed gambling. Bettors wagered on essentially everything, from the tournament winner to whether Cristiano Ronaldo would cry if Portugal got eliminated (he did).

Users took part from every continent except Antarctica, with the US and China generating the most attributable volume, followed by Canada, Thailand, and the UK. Fewer than 1% of wallets had ties to illicit activity, though Chainalysis still traced roughly $5.4 million in flows originating from sanctioned or otherwise illicit sources. Beyond betting, fans also traded about $24 million in FIFA Collect NFTs, and more than 100,000 match tickets were distributed through the platform. More detail on the report is available via CoinDesk.
