Zuckerberg Promises Everyone a Personal AI Agent — While Meta's Free Cash Flow Collapses 91%
Speaking on Meta's Q2 2026 earnings call with investors, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said that within five years, billions of people will have a personal AI agent working on their behalf almost around the clock.
“I think that it's extremely unlikely if you look out five years from now — whatever period of time you want — that you don't have billions of people with a personal agent that understands your goals and that is just working on your behalf 24/7 to achieve your goals in whatever the domain is that you care about.”
— Mark Zuckerberg, CEO, Meta
According to Zuckerberg, these agents will help with finances, health, relationships and household management: "Soon, we'll have agents that can work on your behalf 24/7 to help you achieve goals and improve your life, health, relationships, finances, anything," he said. He singled out messaging apps, WhatsApp especially, as central to that vision, noting it's already the leading surface where people interact with Meta AI. He was equally direct about the business model: "We believe that there will continue to be a significantly higher margin on selling intelligence rather than selling compute directly" — and more than 1 million businesses worldwide already use Meta's AI agents on WhatsApp and Messenger.
The prediction landed against a less comfortable backdrop: Meta spent $31.1 billion on AI in the quarter, which sent free cash flow down 91% year over year, from $8.55 billion to $784 million, while Reality Labs posted roughly $4.6 billion in losses. Shares dropped nearly 10% right after the earnings release. In the same stretch, Meta and BlackRock announced a $14 billion data center partnership in El Paso, Texas — meaning infrastructure spending is set to keep climbing. In a Wall Street Journal op-ed, Zuckerberg also argued against concentrating future "superintelligence" in the hands of a few companies — even as he builds it at a scale few others can match.
While Zuckerberg talks about personal agents for everyday finances in the abstract, crypto is already letting agents handle real money directly: Coinbase has already let AI agents trade crypto on a user's behalf. More on Zuckerberg's remarks is also available via TechCrunch.
