A Hong Kong woman lost $3.3 million in a romance crypto scam

Hong Kong police flagged the largest romance-linked crypto scam case they've seen so far this cycle: a veteran insurance agent, a woman in her 50s, lost more than HK$26 million (about $3.3 million) after trusting an online contact she'd been messaging for months.

According to police, the relationship began last year, when the victim was introduced to a man who called himself "Uncle" and claimed to work in the car trade. Communication continued over WhatsApp and gradually turned into an online romance — the man regularly checked in on her wellbeing before eventually pitching crypto investments and convincing her to download a dedicated trading app.

• Over roughly six months, the victim handed scammers HK$4 million in cash and wired nearly HK$22 million more to mule accounts
• The app showed returns above 800% — on paper, the investment looked like a runaway success
• The scam only unraveled when she tried to withdraw her funds and couldn't
