Azure just topped $100B in annual revenue for the first time — the market is buying the AI payoff
Microsoft reported its fourth-quarter and full fiscal-year 2026 results: Azure revenue topped $100 billion in a single year for the first time ever, up 41% from $75 billion the year before. Shares jumped 7-8% in after-hours trading, Fortune reports — against a broader market decline, it was arguably the day's biggest signal that massive AI infrastructure spending is finally showing up in the numbers, not just in slide decks.
Total quarterly revenue came in at $90 billion (+18% year over year, above the $87.7 billion estimate), with full-year net income at $133.7 billion (+31%). The Microsoft Cloud segment grew 27% to $59.3 billion for the quarter, while Azure growth specifically accelerated to 43% in the quarter — beating the 40% analysts expected. Guidance for the next quarter points to roughly 45% Azure growth.
- Commercial remaining performance obligations (RPO) grew 84% to $678 billion
- Paid Copilot 365 seats topped 30 million
- Quarterly capex is guided above $50 billion, with full FY2026 capex around $175 billion
- Gains from Microsoft's OpenAI stake came to roughly $5 billion, and from its Anthropic stake, $3.2 billion
That second figure — real profit from stakes in OpenAI and Anthropic — is what surprised the market: betting on several different AI labs at once (Azure now offers more than 11,000 models from multiple providers) is already generating billions, not just adding to the balance sheet. That also explains why models like GPT-5.6 inside Microsoft 365 Copilot coexist with simultaneous support for rival labs — it's one strategy, not a contradiction. It's a signal for crypto markets too: exposure to OpenAI and Anthropic keeps showing up there as well — Coinbase already lets people trade both companies' stock ahead of any IPO.
Nothing here should be taken as financial advice — just information to consider.
