Blue rising line transitioning into a flat orange line - cover for the S&P 500 vs bitcoin divergence news

S&P 500 added crypto's $2 trillion market cap this month. Bitcoin shrugs

Over the past month, the S&P 500 has gained 3.12%, adding roughly $2.1 trillion in market cap and hitting a record — the index reached 7,723 points, with total company value at $70.5 trillion. Bitcoin looks pale by comparison: up just 2%, trading around $64,600, the same level it was at back in July.

Analyst Adam Haeems attributes the gap to the shape of the rally itself: equity gains are concentrated in sectors bitcoin has "little direct" exposure to, chiefly AI and semiconductors. Paul Haeems adds that rising bond yields create extra headwinds — capital is effectively "being paid to remain outside crypto," with Treasury yields now at their highest since 2008. Markus Thielen argues traders collectively believe in an October cycle bottom, so "they're waiting on the sidelines" rather than adding exposure even as stocks rally.

  • S&P 500: +3.12% this month, record 7,723 points, $70.5 trillion market cap
  • Bitcoin: +2% this month, around $64,600 — the same level as in July
  • USDT supply fell from $190 billion in April to $183 billion; USDC from $79.5 billion to $72 billion

The divergence also has crypto-specific causes: the Coldcard hack is still adding to its damage total, and the market never got the clarity it wanted on the CLARITY Act's fate in the Senate. Spot bitcoin ETFs did pull in $626 million this week — the highest since early May — but that follows a $61.53 million weekly outflow that snapped a three-week inflow streak. While the AI-driven stock rally runs on its own logic, crypto is still searching for its own catalyst — one that may not show up until later this year, if regulatory uncertainty finally clears.

Nothing here should be taken as financial advice — just information to consider.
