AI Sector Faces Its Biggest Weekly Test: Infrastructure Spend vs. Profit

Wall Street is heading into one of its busiest weeks of the year for tech: Microsoft and Meta report after the close on July 29, Apple and Amazon follow on July 30, and the Fed announces its rate decision on Wednesday, CryptoBriefing reports. But investors aren't just watching profit — they want to know whether the enormous spend on AI infrastructure is starting to turn into actual revenue.

There's already a reason for nerves: the market reacted sharply after Alphabet's July 22 earnings. Revenue grew 24% year-over-year to $119.8 billion, and cloud revenue jumped 82% to $24.8 billion — but quarterly capex of $44.9 billion pushed free cash flow negative for the first time since 2004 (-$5.9 billion). The company raised its 2026 capex guidance to $195-205 billion, and shares fell more than 4% in after-hours trading before extending losses the next day, per Benzinga.

Tech giants are spending on AI like there's no tomorrow, but investors have realized it's tomorrow they care about. They want to see today's spending turn into tomorrow's earnings, but so far there's no sign of this.

  • Combined capex among the biggest tech companies is approaching $725 billion for 2026.
  • Microsoft and Meta report July 29, Apple and Amazon report July 30 — all after market close.
  • The Fed's rate decision lands Wednesday, with June core PCE data out Thursday.

The key point is that demand for cloud and AI services remains genuinely strong — which is exactly why the base case for the sector still leans positive. If Microsoft, Meta, and Amazon show that AI spending is converting into real growth in cloud, advertising, and enterprise revenue, the market could quickly flip its focus — from "AI infrastructure is too expensive" to "AI is the growth driver again." For Nasdaq, semiconductors, data centers, and stories like Cathie Wood's bet on orbital data centers, this week could be a strong catalyst either way: fear over AI capex is already priced in — now the market needs proof that spending is starting to work.
