Cathie Wood: SpaceX Could Become the Most Important Company in History

Ark Invest founder Cathie Wood made one of the boldest calls of her career this week, saying SpaceX "could become the most important company in history, and I mean in global history." The comment came even as SpaceX shares (ticker SPCX) have fallen roughly 47% from their peak, dropping the company out of the top 10 most valuable public firms and behind Meta.

SPCX began trading after SpaceX's record $75 billion IPO earlier this year — we covered how that same IPO caused problems for crypto users holding tokenized SpaceX shares in a separate piece. Since then, SpaceX's market cap has slid significantly, but according to Fox Business, Ark Invest isn't selling — it's been buying more shares across several of its ETFs, raising its overall position.

Wood's thesis rests on two pillars. The first is Starlink: by various estimates, SpaceX controls roughly 70-75% of all satellites currently in orbit. The second, more unexpected pillar is orbital data centers — the idea of moving compute into space, where free solar power and natural cooling make operations cheaper than on Earth. Part of this is already running: the company's roughly 1-gigawatt data-center hub near Memphis is already renting capacity to Anthropic and Google, with another site planned in Texas.

In other words, in Wood's view, what makes SpaceX historically significant won't be rockets or Mars — it will be satellite communications and AI compute, infrastructure that directly competes with traditional data centers and shapes the cost of training future models.
